Never be the best

I'm a father, a husband, a teacher, a friend, a 3D game artist, a gamer, and many other things. That's why I'll never be the best at any of these things. Luckily, I don't have to be. I just try my best and enjoy the ride.

Career

I studied Industrial Design at the Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands. That's where I first learned about 3D software. It was love at first sight. After my graduation, I was a product manager at Draka Nederland for a short while. I missed the freedom and mostly, the 3D. So, I quit and became a freelancer. That was easier said than done. I wasn't very good at acquisition and administration. I needed more security and started teaching 3D; part-time.

Teaching is very rewarding. (Unfortunately, financially you could do better.) It became another love. Today, I'm no longer a freelancer. I teach full time; 3D game art at the Graphic Lyceum Rotterdam.

Software

Mostly, I use 3D Studio Max, Mudbox, Photoshop and Unity. I'm sure other software might be equally good, or even better. It's just that I got used to working with these.

Games are reassuring

I'm amazed by the complexity of everything in life. Nothing is simple. Not the social, financial and political structures. Not flora, fauna or even rocks. The more you study anything, the more you realize you will never fully comprehend it. I guess this is why games attract me so much. They are limited. There is a structure to them. You can comprehend the game-play. It's reassuring.

Game-moments

I love games, but I'm far from a hard core gamer. Some of my best game-moments were: Social Chess, Worms, Knights of the old Republic (the old one), Portal (both), Assassins Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Tony Hawk, SSX Tricky, Fallout, Chop Sushi, and many more.
